Ed also said the debut singles from Britney Spears and Lana Del Rey are "perfect."
Ed Sheeran certainly knows a thing or two about writing hit songs, given his impressive track record of over two dozen top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. His keen ear for great music by other artists was evident during a recent appearance on the "Therapuss with Jake Shane" podcast, where he showered praise on some of his favorite songwriters.
When asked by host Shane if he remembered the video for Lana Del Rey’s debut single “Video Games,” Sheeran enthusiastically recalled its release around the same time as his own debut, “A Team.” He described LDR’s track as “incredible,” calling it “the perfect debut song.”
Pressed to name another flawless debut, Ed quickly mentioned Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” and Britney Spears’ “Baby One More Time.” He declared Britney’s iconic track as one of the “top two or three best songs ever written,” underscoring its impact.
Sheeran, demonstrating a deep knowledge of other artists' careers and debut singles, praised “Drivers License” as a “great” song and lauded both of Rodrigo’s albums, Sour and Guts, as “un-skippable” records. He also singled out Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” as another song he couldn’t criticize, highlighting his admiration for well-crafted pop hits.
